Hot runner or cold runner?
Volume, scrap and gate marks — criteria that decide the runner system.
Cold runner starts with lower tooling cost; sprue scrap and handling grow with volume. It fits prototypes and low–mid series.
Hot runner cuts scrap, can shorten cycles and controls gate marks better. Manifold, nozzles and controllers cost more; multi-cavity high-volume jobs amortize them.
Gate type (pin-point, valve, submarine) affects cosmetics and flow balance. DFM flow length, walls and viscosity support the decision.
At Bayplas Kalıp we weigh hot runner needs with steel, cavity count and volume at quote time — justified, not automatic.
Decision criteria
- Annual / batch volume
- Scrap cost and color-change frequency
- Gate mark / cosmetic tolerance
- Cavity count and balanced fill
- Budget vs cycle target
